Sadd Presentations.

Sad presentaions are were 6th graders come in and tell you about drugs and things that you do that are not good.One of the drugs was METH and it is a crystle like substance that you inject or smoke into your body.Another is cocane and you probably now what that is but you can also smoke this into your body.There were many more presentations but they are all comman drugs like cigarets.The 6th graders did a very very good job of presenting.

Middle School Play

       On the 13th of May we went to the Middle School and watched the 7th and 8th graders perform a play. The play was the 80s, so everyone had disco clothes on!  In this play the middle school choir helped sing with them. The play was about some students that came to this skating rink to just get away from everything and hungout. The lady who owned in was going out of business because it was in a very old shack. They all talked her into keeping it and having people repair it. Then we had to go back to school so the play was finished that night!

Mrs. Bedwells Math class

For Mrs.Bedwells we are doing this thing where we check our homework,she'll have wrong awnsers that we have to solve . So that we dont just think "oh well the teacher is always right ",and dont rush through our work.On the last day of May Term we got 15 minutes to mess around.So this is what we did,talked,andthrew paper at each other.

Bowling Party

If we had 20 AR books done then we got to go bowling. We got to miss school for an hour and a half. There was food so you could bring money to eat there. They also had pop machines as well as candy machines. There was only one line for food though so it got pretty big at times, but other than that it was a fun time bowling and missing school.

May Term

May term is when we switch classes like we will do in 6th grade.We have three classes before lunch and one after lunch. Our classes take uasally are 40minutes, but some are a little longer. In every class we have a diffrent teacher, and we are sometimes with some of the same students. May term is over now, but we are ready for 6th grade.

The iPad 2!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Nichols got a brand new white iPad 2.  It is the awesomest thing ever.  She got the 64 gigabyte model,  which is a lot of space!  It has 2 cameras, one for HD video and pictures.  And for taking pictures of your face and video chatting on facetime.  There is also an app called photobooth that you can take pictures and videos with really cool effects!  Mrs. Nichols also bought a green smart cover.  A smart cover is a cover that apple made special for the iPad 2.  What it does is it magnets on the side of the iPad 2 and automatically turns it on when you open it and shuts it off when you close it.  There is also a special material on the inside to keep the screen clean.  The iPad 2 really is the coolest tech thing in the room!

Green Screen Blog!

We have some pretty cool tech stuff in our room. One of our latest tech things is our new green screen! It is just some green paper glued and stapled to the back wall. It is pretty cool! In one of our social studies classes, we are making a news cast, and we get to use the green screen to put in a backdrop! I am very excited to see how this turns out!

Honor Choir

On May 31st , the honor choir will go around the city performing.  First, the parents have to sign a permission slip saying the can go. After we perform at Oviatt, the Middle School, and the Nursing Home, we will stop at Subway or McDonalds.  The kids will need to bring money, or if you choose to pack a cold lunch you can.  Then we will perform for the 9th and 10th grade choir, and Regency Assisted living.  We will get back to school at about 2:30 p.m.

That's a picture of Levi's new envision project. He has been working hard just like the others who are also on the new envisions project. Some kids have finished the other envisions which was about anything they wanted to reasearch. This project is a vacation of their choice. They get to choose when, where, and who their going with on this vacation. They could go anywhere from China to Africa, depends on what they want. It will be really fun, you better hope they pick you to go with!

Learning Locks

In class we are learning how to use locks because May Term is next week! Also because Mrs.Nichols wants us to know how to use them when we go to Middle School next year. We all have locks on our lockers now so we can practice opening our lockers before May Term starts! Before we had the locks on our lockers we used three of Mrs. Nichols locks to practice. Now we use different locks for when we open our lockers. Mrs. Nichols told us to remember right, left, right.

May Term Prize

For May Term each week on Friday we are having a prize.The prize is if you have under three demerits you can go,but if you have four and above you may not go.We are also doing this for the Capital.I think this friday we our going outside to have some fun .May Term will last for three weeks.So please encourage your daughter or son to not get any demerits.

Science

(this picture is for planting our plants in the terrariums and this is how good they grew well)      In science we have just gotten done with our terrariums and brine shrimp and all of that plant stuff. But Friday was test day. I missed 5 out of 34 so that means I got 85% and thats a B. We also worked on beetles, plants, and brine shrimp. For beetles we had to do their medamorpheses and research different beetles. For plants we planted corn, clovers, barley, radishes, and peas. All of the plants grew big exept for the clovers. They all also molded but still grew. For brine shrimp we put a little spoonful of eggs in a cup and put 0, 2, 4, 6 spoons of salt in each of our 4 cups. We learned that they need to have salt to live and 2 and 4 spoons of salt made them viable. But in the 0 and 6 spoons of salt in we put 2 spoons of salt in the 0 spoons and 75ml of water in the 6 spoons. The 0 spoons grew but the 6 spoons didn't for any of our groups. We have tons of fun in science.

At the end of the year we are going to have a tie dye day. your are going to have to supply your own shirt preferebly a white tee shirt and bring it on Monday, May 2nd. ZOOMER!!

    Allie created a sonic pic on the book Zoomer. A sonic pic is when you take pictures of a book, then nararate it. Hers was so entertaining we all wanted to make sonic pics. So many of usstarted one. We mat then use them for skyping the 1st graders. Thanks!!

D.A.R.E

On April 13th it was the last day of  D.A.R.E.For the last day of  D.A.R.E we got to use fatal glasses and played basketball and walked in a strait line with them on, and they also brought the drug dog.We found out that the drug dog could search are schools lunch room for drugs in less than ten minutes.

Math

In Mr.Ramthun's math class we are learing how to solve pan-balance problems. We are doing ok, but we should practice a little more on them. Anyway, we do a variety of diffrent pan-balance problems.Some of the time we work on our own, but Mr.Ramthun helps us too. Today we just started working math problems using algebra.

A few days ago Allie's dad came and talked to us about patents.  He is a patent lawyer and he gives people patents for their inventions.  A patent is a thing that you get when you invent something and you don't want anyone else to setal your idea.  One patent is on the telephone, the first person to invent it was Elisha Gray but he didn't get a patent so Alexander Gram Bell whos name everyone knows.

Clamation!!!

In art, our class did claymation. We had a partner that Mrs.Nichols chose. We had either to search a joke or not do a joke. Then, we had to make the characters that were in our joke out of clay. Next, we took a picture then we moved our figure then we tooke another picture etc. The equivalents are 300 pictures =30 seconds and 600 pictures = 60 seconds(1 min.)

Frames

With the pictures we took with cameras we made a video. We had to put the pictures into a program called frames. It takes the pictures and puts them all together into a movie. You can add signs into the movie if you are changing the sceane or setting of the movie.

I.T.B.S brain breaks!!!

During the ITBS we learned a new kind of brain break, actully we learned three. I think that it helped us a lot because we needed breaks in between the tests so we weren't so tired. Here is one of the most exciting ones we learned during our tests, put your hands together with the two middle figner knuckles. All of the rest of the fingers are touching points. Now try to get them off two fingers at a time. I couldnt do it with my third finger and still haven't figured out how to.

I meant to say my fourth finger!  ☺

Calenders!!!!!!!!!!!

In calenders we write the word given to us. Then we write the first sentence to the right of it and next we try to find a word that sounds just like it for instance like bow for bowing down and bow as in bow and arrow.

Iowa History Play

In school we did the Iowa history play. We did it on the April 8. It was a lot of fun to do. Mrs.Austen,Mrs.Kricakal and Mrs.Tobey did it on the April 7. And Mr.Ranthum,Mrs.Bedwell,Mrs.Hegland on April 6. The boys got to wear mustaches if  they wanted to when you ripped it off it hurt for a little bit. Their were four parts the first one is dancing second one is the civil war introducing some of types of the people came to america and the last part was in the school house.

Inventors/Inventions!

Our latest project was on inventors. We all paried up, except for one person, and we all were assigned an inventor. We researched them and with that information we made projects! We used Animoto, Voicethred, which you will probably remember from conferenecs, Glogster, and the one person who was by herself made it to Museum Box. Speed Play

Every week we have a game that we play with our weekly vocab words. It is called speed play. It has the definitions to the words and you have to drag and drop them to the line below. You try to get all the vocab words as fast as you can and then you submit your name and you might just make the leaderboard. The one who finishes the fastest in our class gets a piece of candy. It is hard at first but it is a fun way to help us on our vocab words.

Itbs

We started Itbs on April 4th ,and we finished on April 7th.We completed 15 test.Itbs stands for Iowa Tests Basic Skills. We got to bring lemon drops and jolly ranchers to suck on them during the test.We all have worked hard on Itbs.

Art fair

The art fair is coming up real soon.Parents and their children can come and enjoy all the  fasinating art that is shown.The art that is shown is by your children and what they have been learning and doing in art this year.The art fair is about how kids can show their wonderful art talents.I hope you all can come  and see these fasinsting art work.

Brine Shrimp

In science class, we did brine shrimp. In the picture above you won't be able to see the shrimp because, well, there shrimps! They are so small that you might not be able to see them up close and personal! They are in cups with salt water, and all there is tons of them floating around. Most of our shrimp were unsuccessful. Maybe some got lucky, or the others did something wrong. The shrimp were very cute to the girls, and to the boys, COOL! We had lots of fun with them.

The Bowling party is on May 20th.It is the last AR test of the year.You have to have 20 books to go.The people who do make it get to go to airlanes and bowl. 3rd grade has to have 15 books 4th has to have 17 and 5th has to have 20.So far there are about 100 kids that have made it.You have to have all of your books done a week befor we go.It will be very fun!

the may term locks

0In a few weeks may term starts and we have to put a lock on our lockers.  We have two locks and they are both purple.  Since we have to put a lock on our lockers we have to figure out how to unlock them.  In class we take turns passing around the locks and unlocking them.  So far about half of the class can unlock the locks but we are still figuring it out.

Glogster

   Gloster is very fun. It is almost like blogging but it's like a poster. I like glogster because there is anamation so some props move not just stay still like a statue but some do. You can also use your own pictures or videos and thats what I like. So thats what we do with glog.

6th grade math tessellations

In math we are doing tessellations.  We learned about esher and semiregular tessellations.
We are on out last unit.  It is unit 10.  After we finish unit 10, we are going to take
the end of the year test.  Mrs.Nichols thinks we will be down by the end of April.

Ear Buds

In our class we need to use ear buds. We do because we go take our spelling tests on a website called spelling city, it tells you the words and you have to spell it. We also listen to our reading street stories on Moodle. We always need ear buds around the classroom. One big reason is so that we don't disturb others. Mrs.Nichols has already gone through 6 or 7 pairs and they're gone! So make sure you always have ear buds!

Brian POP

Brian Pop is a special website because you take a test then it grades it for you. We have done many tests on this website. Like stuff that comparison or to one big topic of thee world the last one we did was about a lady who went to space.This test that we take is ten questions. Its fun but a little hard so its a good challenge. Mrs. Nichols may or may not grade it but she usualy does. This is the best website to learn in my opinion because we watch a movie and take a test after it.

Inventors

In Social Studies we are learning about people who had invented something, or made an innovation. We have been finding facts to put in our Voicethread and Animoto. We are also making a glogster on something that we want to be invented. Our epals in Arizona are studying about inventors too. When we are all done we will show our project to our epals.

Blogging about clay animation

Hey everybody, today im blogging about my class making clay animation. Most of our things are about a joke like why did the chicken cross the road? Becuase he saw something scary on the other side! So you you would make a chicken and the scary thing and then take a lot of picters with tiny movements. then you put all the pics together and it will look cheesy but very cool!!!

Dodgeball Championship

In school we do dodgeball.You have to win every game to get to the championships.Mrs.Fox  Mrs.Nichols class went to the championship.Fox lost by 2 rounds.And if you lost you were out of the tournment.It was fun playing dodgeball.We played it during our recess time.We beat Mrs.Austen,Mrs.Kirkal,Mrs.Hegland.It was a awesome feeling that we won.And we got to keep the trophy.

JA Biztown

      Tuesday in JA Biztown we had our own jobs to do all day! The student either got $8.00, $8.50, or 9.00 for their job. The students got paid twice today so they should have twice that much! We had two breaks today so we could eat lunch or go around and buy things or just hangout with friends that work at different stores. Every month we have to blog about something. If you forget to do your blog it counst as a late. Also, parents can check what we have for homework on the blog and you can see by the blogs we do whats going on in Lakewood Elementary. Also, Mrs. Nichols gives us a lot of time to complete our blogs in class but, you cant do them at home is the bad part because she is the ony one that knows the password!!!

Dare Report

In class we are wrigting  D.A.R.E. reports. We used to have D.A.R.E.every early out. I think D.A.R.E. has taught us alot about drugs and alcohol. We are trying to finish wrigting this report by the end of the week. We have three choices.One we can  have our parents  type our report after it's finshed. Two we can type it ourself. Third we can use Dragon. Dragon is were we can speak our report into a micraphone and it will type it for us.

Music Class

  In music we are doing a research project. We are doing this project on famous jazz artists, such as Herbie Hancock. We all get a different artist to research, and when we finish with our research we will write a report to present to the class. This project has been really fun so far! I think it will be really cool when we finish it!

playstation move

The playstation move is like a kinnect for the playstation.You stand about 5 feet away from it and it does what ever you do on the screen.The only thing  is you have to have a certain game for it.We just got it about a week ago.Our PE teacher got it.It is a very fun system. It is in the pe for life room with all of the wiis and playstations.

Spring Break

     Spring break is coming up it's going to be the 12th through the 20th of March. A lot of people are going out of town for Spring Break to have fun or see some family members. I am going to the Mall of America. Everyone will have tons of fun being out of school. Well I just wanted to inform for about when it is and what I'm doing and what other people are doing. J.A. Biztown

   We have started J.A. Biztown!! Our mayor is Shae and our judge is Kennedy. We are going tuesday, March 8, 2011. We have practiced writing checks. We also did paperwork for our buisnesses. State basketball game

Yeah the boys won on  Tuesday!!!!It was 62-50. They are playing to night and it is still whiteout .If they win this game they will play on Saturday and win or lose the Championship game!!!THe team they are playing colors are black and yellow.The game starts at  6:30 tonight so be there to cheer them on . GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dodge Ball

  In dodge ball our class has wun our first games so far. Our next game will be after spring break. We will be playing Mrs.Hegland's class. In a dodge ball gamewe do girls vs. girls, and boys vs. boys. We love playing dodge ball, and I hope we beat Mrs.Hegland's class!

Spelling

In spelling we do workbook pages to hel us with our words.In our spelling books we somtimes do crosswords,word searches.And if you get a 100% you can choose to do the work book pages or do the extra page.We take our spelling tests on spellingcity.com.On their we can take the test to get better.Or you can play games that have your words in it.Some of the games are really fun to do.And if you get a lot of practice you can do very good on your test.

The New Computer

We have a new computer in our class.  Mrs.Nichols entered a contest on twiter and won.  The computer is so cool you can touch it instead of using the mouse.  The computer has a camera so you can skype.  It is 23 inches wide and has windows 7.  It is pretty cool.   Allie

Social Studies

Katie

In Social Studies we are doing The American Revolution. We are learning about people that were in it and people that were an important part of the war. Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Nichols are our Social Studies teachers, but we're with Mrs.Fox right now. Mrs. Fox teaches our Social Studies class, and she is really good at it. She shows us what happened in the war and when it happened. I like having Social Studies and so does everybody else. We have lots of fun and we do projects that are fun a lot. Oh, and before I forget, everybody did awesome on the test!!

In dodge ball our class has wun our first games so far. Our next game will be Thursday March 10th, 2011. We will be playing Mrs.Hegland's class.

Tech Day

     Recently in class we earned tech day with our marbles. We get to bring in snacks and drinks and our tech stuff and we get to watch the movie MegaMind. We aren't finished with it yet since we were so busy the whole last week. We have been trying and trying to watch it and do our tech thing, but I'm sure we will finish it this week. Math So Far

    In math we just took a test. Our test was on ratios and proportons. The was pretty hard but I think we did pretty good.  We havn't got our tests back but we already started on unit 9.  We also have a wall of fame for answering a question right at any random time of day. Last week we had to remember how rates and ratios are not the same.

Health Teachers

The dietitian's are back! Like last year we are learning more about eating right. They talk to us about the food pyramid too. Sometimes we do activities and  make healthy foods with the dietitian's. They have been working with us in P.E. We have been setting goals with them. the goals are usually eating more fruits, veggies, and doing more exercise.     By Anna

New Rotation

Hi, today my blog is about inventors. My inventors name is John Wesley Hyatt. We all have a partner to help and for us to help them. The Music Concert

A long time ago in the begining of Febuary we had a music concert.  I had a lot of fun doing it and the theme was rock and roll. I think it was the best concert we have had and it was also the last one.  My favorite part was when Chantz flipped Gretta Hegland over his head.  It was really fun and the reason that we all got to wear purple and gold was because it was our last concert and we were celebrating all of the years that we have worked with Mrs. Friesen.

Boys state basketball game!!!!!!!!!!!

Tonight is the state basketball game.The boys made it this far so I hope they win.At the game it is whiteout so wear white.Tickets cost $8 dollors;you can buy them there at wells fargo arena.Good luck for the boys.  I will blog more if they when or lose.

Epals

In writing, we are doing something called Epals. We are writing to people in France and in Arizona. We can tell them about school and weather in Iowa. It's really fun learning about people in different parts of the country and even different parts of the world!!! I hope I can continue to do this because it is a great expereince talking to them.

Music Concert

Our music concert was very fun! I really liked how we got to do a rock 'n' roll theme. I think our parents really enjoyed it too. I am really happy because it was our last concert in elementary school! So we won't have another one for a long time! I think just about everyone liked the concert!

New Tech Tool!!

We have a new 23 inch, touch screen Think Center in our 5th grade room.  How did we get such a great new toy?  Mrs. Nichols won the new computer in a contest on Twitter!!  Kids are so excited and have been checking out what this new tool can do.  We plan on uses it in many ways in our classroom.  We are starting a new unit on inventors and will be using it for research, Glogster, Animoto, and Vuvox!  We will be putting it to work.  I would like to put out a big THANK YOU to all that made it possible for us to be enjoying this new tech tool!  Thanks Cool Cat!+

Intervention

 For intervention we change classrooms. In each classroom kids learn diffrent things and read diffrent books to fit their skill level. The advanced group reads JR Great Books. Ask your child what they are doing in Intervention and what they are learning. Please encourage your student to read at home. Thank you!

Reading Storys

Reading is when we all come get together and get a book we read as a group. We also have different storys about different things like: people with cp, fictional storys, Realistic fiction, and last but not least nonfiction. we have alot of storys to read about. We sometimes have good storys and bad storys most of the time we have good ones.

The Field Trip

A couple days ago we went to the science center. First we went to the Da Vince exhibit and learned that Da Vince wrote a 29 on the back of the Mona Lisa. After that we went to a movie about hubble and galaxies. Me and my friend Ryan made up a galaxy named Brainious because one of the galaxies looked like a brain. Next my group went to the animal exhibit. We saw tons of animals and even saw one shedding. Then we went to the water area and learned that we can use water to generate energy. Finally we went to the stars area and looked at facts about stars and planets, my favorite planet is saturn. At the end we watched a movie about stars and constellations.

Basketball tournement here at lakewood

 Norwalk basketball team had a basaketball tournement here at lakewood.On the team there is Shae,Abby,Rachel,Trinity,Abbie,Bailey,Kennedi,Joplyn,and Kennedy.The first two games we won.The  second to last game was CRAZY !!!!  It was time for lunch and we were in Liz Elliotts office while she went to go get us something to eat .We saw someone coming so we all went to the other side of the room where they cant see us we heard a noise and Abby asked Bailey did you toot I said no it was the door Liz came in with Mcdonalds Abby ate half my fries! Rachel and Abbie W. were laughting. It was time to go play ball so we went back to the gym. We got to foul a lot refs were letting us.Shae hit her head against the wood, Abby talked a girl out. Bailey fouled out. Kennedy was tired,and Rachel hated the person she had to gaurd.The next game my mom got a picture of Abby standing next to a really tiny person. Both games were tiring to play in but fun.We lost two games ,but we came in 4th out of 12 teams.After that there was a party at my house only some of the team came.

      On the 27th the school was going to watch  a movie. The movie was after school in he cafiteria scence the cafiteria has a huge projector showing the movie is easy. The only sad thing about the hole thing is that it costs 25 warrior way tickets .the movie that was showing is called the Blind Side thats a good movie so it was worth it.

Nathan's Birthday

Nathan  is in Mrs.Nichols class. His birthday was January 13th. His mom, his baby brother and his little sister came to the classroom. His little baby brother's name is Eli, and his little sister's name is Chloe. They brought yummy cupcakes and Chloe walked in saying: We got cupcakes for Nathan. Nate must have been having fun because he was smiling almost the whole time. Everybody was having a fun time and it was great.

Starlab

We do many speical things in fifth grade like field trips and assemblies,but my favorite is starlab.In starlab we learn about stars and constellations in a blow up lab lie a big bouncey house. When we go inside its pich black so we bring flash lights then we turn them off, and turn the projector on then we can see stars that you can't see in Iowa and learn about those stars.

Today i'm writing about art. We are making a stain glass window, with Mr. johnson.The teacher has a dog named Reeses. He has a dog named Reeses. Me , Ethan, Rachel, Logan, Kennedy, Sophie, and Emma came after school to help finish it. It shows Christina Taylor Greene in heaven dancing in mud puddles and playing baseball. She LOVED to dance She was a ballerina. It was a bad day for everyone. She was born on 9-11 and died 12-20-11.

The Science Center

Last Tuesday the whole fifth grade went to the Science Center.  The first thing that we did was go to the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit.  It was really fun there.  Then we went to the IMAX and saw a movie about the hubble telescope.  The IMAX was really cool and it felt like I was laying down but I wasn't.  After the IMAX we went to the other exhibits, then we saw another movie about the stars and constelaltions.  The Science Center was really fun.
